About This Family
Distribution:
Marine waters worldwide.
Habitat:
Wide range of habitats in coastal waters and open ocean.
Remarks:
Most dalatiid sharks lack spines in the dorsal fin (although some species of Squaliolus have just one in the first dorsal fin). Light organs are present in most species, often appearing as black dots on the ventral surface.
The dalatiidae family includes the smallest shark species Squaliolus laticaudus. Also included in this family are the parasitic cookie cutter sharks (genus Isistius). With modified mouths, they cause circular wounds in fishes and cetaceans on which they feed.
These sharks are live bearers.
The family Dalatiidae comprises seven genera and about 10 species.
