About This Family
Distribution:
Tropical and temperate waters of the Atlantic (north to Iceland), Indian and Pacific Oceans.
Habitat:
Continental and insular slopes.
Remarks:
Lanternsharks are smaller sharks, not reaching more than 90 cm in most species. Both dorsal fins have spines, both of which are grooved and the caudal fin has a subterminal notch. This family earns its common name because most species have luminous organs on the body. There is some debate as to whether to include this family as a subfamily of Dalatiidae, however Nelson (2006) recognizes it as its own family.
This family includes 5 genera and 41 species.
