Distribution:
Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific
Habitat:
Marine; tropical to temperate, continental shelves
Remarks:
Distributed circumglobally, the Butterfly rays have an extremely broad disc; the width covers over 1.5 times the length of disc. Some have dorsal fin and poisonous tail spines, while others lack them. The tail is relatively short; caudal fin absent.
The family comprises two genera, Aetoplatea and Gymnura, with at least 11 species.
