About This Family
Distribution:
Circumglobal
Habitat:
Marine. Tropical to warm temperate waters, continental shelves.
Remarks:
The Cownose rays, a subfamily of the eagle rays, are found in continental shelves worldwide. Similar to the characteristics of eagle rays, the Cownose rays have one or more long poisonous spinous tail which is usually longer than disc; head elevated above disc; small dorsal fin present; eyes and spiracles located laterally on head; and some species can leap high into the air. They are ovoviviparous and feed on benthic crustaceans and mollusks.
The subfamily Rhinopterinae contains one genus Rhinoptera with approximately seven species.
