About This Family
Distribution:
North Pacific: off Asia and North America, in Mexico and California.
Habitat:
Marine; continental shelves; tropical to cool-temperate waters.
Remarks:
The Thornbacks family, Platyrhinidae, is commonly found the continental shelves of Asia and North America, also in Mexico and California. They possess a heart-shaped, oval disc; eyes are small and wide apart; two large dorsal fins are on the rear of the thick tail. Strong thorns are present on the dorsal surface of the disc and tail.
The family consists of two genera, Platyrhina (2) and Platyrhinoidis (1), with three species.
