About This Family
Distribution:
Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific; circumtropical waters; continental shelves.
Habitat:
Marine; some found in freshwater and ascending rivers.
Remarks:
Saw fishes are characterized by having a long flat blade snout with teeth of equal size on each side resembling a saw. The barbels absent; body has shark-like features; head is extremely depressed; two dorsal fins and a caudal fin present.

The family contains only two genera, Anoxypristis and Pristis, with about seven species.
