About This Family
Distribution:
Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Ocean
Habitat:
Marine. Temperate to tropical waters; continental and insular slopes.
Remarks:
Sleeper sharks are found worldwide, generally inhabiting the inner shelves in temperate and tropical waters. They usually have spineless dorsal fin, although with an exception in a few species, and a lateral ridge located between the pectoral and pelvic fins. Most members of the family have luminescent organs.
The family consists of seven genera and 17 species.
